Learn to Swim in Birmingham

Learning to swim as an adult in Birmingham should feel calm, private and completely judgement-free. At Competent Swimming, every lesson is private 1-1: just you, your instructor and the water. No group to keep up with, no audience, and an instructor in the water beside you from the first minute. Whether you have never swum a stroke or you want to fix a stroke you already have, you start exactly where you're comfortable.

Where We Teach in Birmingham

Our Birmingham lessons are at a heated, exclusive-use pool at Audley St George's Place in Edgbaston (B15), between the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Five Ways. It is an easy reach from Harborne, Selly Oak, Moseley and central Birmingham, whether you come by car, bus, cycle or on foot. There is free parking on site, and Five Ways station is about an 18-minute walk away. There are no public sessions running while you swim - the pool is yours for the lesson.

Why Private 1-1 (and Why Adults Choose Us)

  • The whole lesson is yours. In a group class you can spend under half the time actually swimming. Here, the whole session is one pool, one swimmer and one instructor in the water with you.
  • Every price is on the page. No callback needed to find out what it costs. New customers start with a £24.99 taster (50% off the £49.99 standard rate), which includes an assessment.
  • Your progress carries forward. Your plan and progress are tracked lesson to lesson, so you never start over or re-explain yourself.
  • Fair terms, both ways. No rolling direct debit. Cancel plans with 30 days' notice, reschedule a lesson with 72 hours' notice.

Our Guarantee

Swim your first 5 metres in 5 lessons, or lesson 6 is free.

Applies after attending your first five lessons - full details on our pricing page. It isn't a refund (lessons are non-refundable); it's simply another lesson, on us, until you're across.

Who It's For

Complete beginners, nervous adults who have put it off for years, returners who learned as a child, and improvers who want cleaner front crawl, breaststroke, backstroke or butterfly. Around 1 in 3 adults in England can't swim 25 metres (Swim England), so if you're starting later, you're in good company.

How to Start

  • Book your £24.99 taster online (it includes an assessment).
  • We get in the water together, at your pace, and set your plan.
  • Choose a 4, 8 or 12-lesson plan - prices from £39.99 per lesson, all published on our pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Where in Birmingham are your swimming lessons?

At a heated, exclusive-use pool at Audley St George's Place in Edgbaston (B15), between the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Five Ways, with free parking on site. It's an easy reach from Harborne, Selly Oak, Moseley and central Birmingham. Lessons are private 1-1, with no public sessions running while you swim.

Do you teach complete adult beginners?

Yes. Most of our adult swimmers start as complete beginners, many of them nervous of the water. Your first lesson is a taster with an assessment, so we start exactly where you're comfortable, in the shallow end, with your instructor in the water beside you.

How much do adult swimming lessons cost in Birmingham?

New customers start with a £24.99 taster lesson (50% off the £49.99 standard rate), which includes an assessment. After that, plans work out from £39.99 per lesson on the 12-Lesson Plan (£44.99 on the 8-Lesson Plan, £49.99 on the 4-Lesson Plan). Every price is on our pricing page, and there's no rolling direct debit.

Do I need to be able to swim before my first lesson?

No. You can start from the very beginning, including if you can't yet put your face in the water. Your taster assessment sets a plan around where you actually are, and at our Birmingham pools it's backed by our guarantee: swim your first 5 metres in 5 lessons, or lesson 6 is free (applies after attending your first five lessons; full details on the pricing page).
