The short answer

No. You're not too old - and you're far from alone. Around 1 in 3 adults in England can't swim 25 metres (Swim England). Adults learn to swim in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond, most of them starting as complete beginners. The thing that stops people usually isn't age. It's the idea of a group class, being watched, or going back to how school lessons felt.

What actually matters (and it isn't age)

  • Privacy. Our lessons are private 1-1: no class, no audience. It's just you, your instructor and the water.
  • Starting where you are. We begin in the shallow end, at your pace. If putting your face in the water feels like a lot right now, that's exactly where we start.
  • An instructor in the water with you. Not standing over you with a clipboard - beside you, an arm's reach away whenever you want support.
  • A plan that moves at your speed. Your plan and progress are tracked lesson to lesson, so you build steadily and never start over.

Why adults think they've “left it too late”

Most people picture a busy group class or a bad school memory. Take those away and what's left is calm, private, one-to-one time in a warm pool. Adults often progress quickly precisely because the lesson is built around one person - you.

What the first step looks like

Your first lesson is a £24.99 taster (50% off the £49.99 standard rate) that includes an assessment. We get in the water together, go at your pace, and set a plan you're comfortable with. There's no pressure to continue and no rolling direct debit.

If fear is the barrier, not age

Frequently asked questions

What's the oldest age you can learn to swim?

There isn't one. Adults learn to swim well into their 60s and beyond. Learning to swim is about steady, comfortable steps in a supportive setting, not about age. Private 1-1 lessons let you go entirely at your own pace.

I've never swum before - can I still start?

Yes. Most of our adult swimmers start as complete beginners. Your first lesson is a taster with an assessment, so we start in the shallow end exactly where you're comfortable, with your instructor in the water beside you.

Will other people watch me?

No. Lessons are completely private 1-1, with no public session running and no audience. The pool space is yours for the lesson, so there's nobody watching from the side.

How long does it take an adult to learn to swim?

It varies, but many adults build foundational confidence and technique in around five weekly lessons. Your taster assessment gives you a tailored estimate, and at our Birmingham pools the pace is backed by our guarantee: swim your first 5 metres in 5 lessons, or lesson 6 is free (applies after attending your first five lessons; full details on the pricing page).
